Mechanical Splice Requirement

This type of mechanical splice consists of a coupling sleeve with shearhead screws which are designed to shear off at a specified torgue. The reinforcing bars are inserted to meet at a stop at the center of the coupling sleeve and the screws are tightened. The tightening process embeds the pointed screws into the bars. For one type of splice, the screws force the bars into contact with internal gripping rails. For the other type of splice, the screws force the bars to wedge into the coupling sleeve’s converging interior wall. The heads of the screws can be tightened using pheumatic impact wrench. For making a splice between two fixed bars, coupling sleevs without a center stop are available. This sleeve can be slipped ocmpletely onto one bar and subsequenty repositioned over the two bar ends.

ACI 318 Chapters 18 and 25 state the requirements for mechanical splices. They are:

TYPE 1
Shall develop in tnsion and compression as required at least 125 percent of the specifiedf yeild of the bar. Example: For ASTM A615 grade 60 bar: 1.25 x 60,000 psi = 75,000 psi. Therefore, a splice test exceeding 75,000 psi meets the Type 1 requirement for A615 Grade 60 bar.

TYPE 2
Shall conform to Type 1 requirements and develop 100% of the specified ultimate strength of the bar being spliced. Example: For ASTM A615 Grade 60 bar: 1.00 x 90,000 psi = 90,000 psi. Therefore, a splice test exceeding 90,000 psi meets the Type 1 and Type 2 requirement for A615 Grade 60 bar.

Dowel bar mechanical splices are used to avoid reinforcing bars from penetrating or protruding from forms. They are also known as “tension-compression” mechanical spices, since they can also resist both tension tensile and compression forces.

All of the various systems commercially available consist of serveral components. The coupling component, initially embedded in concrete, is internally threaded and another component, installed after stripping the forms, is externally threaded. The internally threaded component is normally designed to fasten directly to the form face and is usually encased in the first concrete placement. These systems are available in a variety of designs, configurations, sizes, and shapes.

Tension-Compression Mechanical Splices

The cold-swaged coupling sleeve uses a hydraulic swaging press with specialties to deform the sleeve around the ends of the spliced reinforcing bars to produce positive mechanical interlock with the reinforcing bars. Bars may be shear-cut, or saw-cut, however, a bar-end check is recommended. Bars of different sizes can be spliced with this system. This mechanical splice can be used for joining reinforcing bars to structural steel members.  Longer sleeves are required for splicing epoxy-coasted reinforcing bars.

The HI-Chairs range in size from 3” to 14” cover. Sizes 3” to 10 1/4” are dual sized in 1/4” increments. 10-1/2” and above are single cover size. See chart below. Many of our brick have grooves built into them to create a cradle for the rebar to set in. This can create many usable dimensions from one brick. For instance, the 3 x 4 x 3 inch combo has an outside dimension of 3 inches by 4 inches. With the two grooves this product will provide cover heights of 2 ½”, 3”, 3 ½”, and 4”.

These are typically used by general contractors in bridge decks and other concrete forming applications. They come in longer sizes such as 24” or 48”, and depending on length, will be reinforced with rebar. Form supports are also stocked in 5”, 5 ½”, 6”, and many other heights.
